Friday, May 11, 2012 – Washington, DC – 101 Women of Hope hosted a volunteer event at Ronald Brown Middle School in Deanwood, Northeast DC. 101 Women of Hope is a community service initiative started by a group of young professionals in the Washington region about three years ago.
Home to just over 200 6th, 7th and 8th graders, the Ronald Brown Middle School welcomed over 100 men and women volunteers from the DC Metropolitan Area. Participants were eager to help beautify the school grounds in anyway possible, through painting, trash cleanup, and equipment assembly. Students were treated to musical mass mentoring sessions via testimony by celebrity recording artists Ledisi, Roc Nation’s Bridget Kelly and the four-member girl group recently signed by Mary J. Blige, JustUs.
Other highlights of the event:
- NFL stars Josh Morgan (Washington Redskins) and Michael McAdoo (Baltimore Ravens) spoke to students about their journeys from middle school to the National Football League.
- Computer equipment (worth more than $30,000) was donated to the event from a local government agency, on behalf of a volunteer.
- More than 40 bags of mulch, 20 cans of paint and 5 pots of flowers were used to beautify the school grounds. One of our 101 Men of Hope Volunteers Adrian McQueen also mowed the entire school lawn the day before to make planting easier for the volunteers.
What a great event, it was an honor to participate. I can’t wait until the next one!
