Real Family | Shinavia & Logan

July 26, 2017
26 Jul 2017

Hola, everyone!

Oh how I just adore the family I’m blogging about today. I’m lucky enough to say I’ve been photographing Shinavia’s family for eight years now! I truly can’t believe how much her son, Logan, has grown and changed since I first met him, especially since I’ve known Shinavia for over 20 years.

Today, Logan is 9 years old and on his way to the 4th grade.  And, it goes without saying, his mom Shinavia and I have become even better friends over the time we’ve worked together. It’s hard to not become friends with someone like Shinavia, frankly; she’s such a peach!

When Shinavia called me to take their photos again, I immediately began counting down the days to our session! And as for the day of the shoot, I had a blast! They had a pretty great time, too, posing between running around the playground and making funny faces.

About our shoot, Shinavia said, “I liked that [our session] was very spontaneous and free. We didn’t have to pose a lot because with kids, they don’t focus for long so ask them to keep posing isn’t going to work but capturing those cute moments are key.”

  • Location: Watkins Park
  • Shinavia’s Wardrobe: Marshall’s
  • Logan’s Wardrobe: Children’s Place

Once Shinavia saw her photos, she said, “I love the photos because I think they capture our personalities. They show how loving and playful we are towards each other. You can tell he’s my only child and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”

Okay, enough text. Check out the awesome mother/son duo, Shinavia and Logan.

I’ll be scheduling another family session like this in August. If you’re interested in your own individual or family portraits, shoot me an email at insana@insanacollins.com or a text to 202-738-9007 to book. Until next time!

Real Weddings: 2017 Edition

May 2, 2017
02 May 2017

Getting married this year? What about next year? Wouldn’t it be cool to discover the latest wedding tips, tricks and trends before your planning gets underway? Know how much couples are spending on flowers, how to find the right vendors, etc.?

Well, you’re in luck! The online wedding resource, Wedding Wire, has just published the wedding trends of 2017. They surveyed more than 13,000 couples who married in 2016 to get the scoop, just for you. Here are some of the results:

1. Technology matters: Couples now spend 50% of their time planning from a smartphone (up from 30% last year). 87% read reviews and ten 60% reach out by email.

2. Uniformity is out: Bridesmaids are more likely to wear non-matching than in previous years, a trend we’ve seen continue to grow.

3. While the average wedding price tag hasn’t grown, millennials spend a bit more: $31,000 on average. However, overall, the average price of a wedding is still about $28,000. Spend on honeymoons ($4,000) and engagement rings ($5,000) is also about the same as last year.

4. 42% of couples pick out the engagement ring together.

5. 56% of couples only consider booking vendors they can find on social media. (Find my page on Instagram at @insanacollins)

6. 71% of couples marry between May and October.

lowres Christian Wedding-297

7. 62% of couples take professional engagement photos.

8. 65% send traditional Save-the-Date cards.

9. When searching for vendors, most couples hire an average of 13 vendors from the venue to the florist to catering and the DJ, with photographers 4th on their list.

10. More than 60% of the wedding budget goes towards catering, the venue, music and photography/videography.

It’s great to know what’s trending, but for your big day, what’s most important to you? Most of my clients say photography is most important, because for all of the time and money spent, it’s the one thing that lasts longer than anything else. While you’re planning, discuss and prioritize as a couple. Save. Search. Budget. And don’t be afraid to ask questions. Shoot me an email at insana@insanacollins.com and I can help answer your questions and cross at least one thing off your list!

Good luck! Until next time,

-Insana

New Year, Newborn

January 7, 2015
07 Jan 2015

Hello dear blog readers and Happy New Year!

Today I have a real treat for you and it comes in the form of 6-day old Judah Miles. What better way to celebrate the new year than with photos of a newborn??  Hold on to your socks though – this honey is so cute he may blow them right off!

Low Res Judah Miles-10

It feels like only a few days ago I was photographing Andrea and Johnny’s engagement photos. I can’t believe it’s already been two years! I remember when I first met Andrea and Johnny, they were so obviously madly in love with each other. It was really only a matter of time until they started adding to their family: a baby brother to big brother Asa.

Because our last photo shoot went so perfectly, I was delighted when they called me up to schedule photos weeks before the birth of adorable little Judah. They are going to be the best parents!

Anyway, I am beyond honored that they asked me to work with them again and to photograph their tiny superhero. As you can see from the photographs below, he is an ultra sweetheart and was a joy to work with.

You may be seeing more of little Judah in the very near future! I’m lucky enough to photograph him every few months with my milestone package. Come back and see for yourself!

Adorable Holiday Portraits

December 11, 2014
11 Dec 2014

Welcome back, guys and gals!

I recently had a spectacular holiday portrait session with the Watts/Jefferson family. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I truly have the best clients ever! This family was no exception. Ranging in age from 6 months to 16 years old, everyone helped keep each other upbeat, on point, and most importantly, smiling throughout the day.

Devin Watts Holiday-7

Devin Watts is actually a friend of mine who I met in…high school! That’s right. Who knew that a hundred years later, I’d be photographing her and her children?!

For our shoot, Devin dressed everyone in the family as if they were headed to a holiday party. I was able to work with their cute outfits, which made for some amazing photos. I loved taking their portraits at her sister’s home because it kept everyone warm, comfortable, and relaxed in familiar surroundings. It was truly a family affair.

Here, mom Devin and I are doing our best to make the baby laugh and smile. It truly was an amazing photo shoot. If any of you are considering a family session or are prepping for an upcoming session, heed the words of mom, Devin:

“Try to schedule your shoot midday after lunch and a nap for children 5 and under…and if possible, have them get dressed just moments before shooting,” she says. Solid advice!

Okay, on to pictures of the Watts/Jefferson family!

I’ve scheduled holiday shoots all the way through January (believe it or not!), so if I don’t get the chance to tell you, I’ll tell you now: Happy Holidays!

Real Wedding: Alisa & Amon

November 19, 2014
19 Nov 2014

Bonjour, everyone!

I am delighted to announce the union of Alisa and Amon, celebrated in September. These two are an incredibly fun-loving couple, and it showed throughout their wedding day.

Low Res Alisa and Amon-85

The wedding was truly special, with two ringbearers, two singers, special socks, and a healthy heaping of family and friends.  It took place at Forest Memorial United Methodist Church in Prince George’s County, MD, followed by the reception at Camelot, on Central Avenue in Bowie, MD. A big thank you goes out to the caterers at Camelot, DJ T-Why, and the other awesome companies that helped make Alisa and Amon’s day so special.

Their reception was also pretty impressive. There wasn’t just one wedding cake; there were two!

The couple first danced to “Rest of Our Lives” by Jeffrey Osbourne, and DJ T-Why played everything from slow jams to Go Go to the most current pop songs of 2014. It was a blast!
